Welcome to the Department of Chemistry, UWI, Mona Campus, one of the original and largest departments in the UWI. Our teaching and research programmes are carried out by 19 full-time academic staff members and 40 full-time and part-time graduate students. The undergraduate programme is supported by 9 part-time lecturers and 12 tutors and demonstrators.

Undergraduate courses offered in the department lead to majors in General Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Food Chemistry and the corresponding minors. In addition we offer programmes leading to the special options Chemistry with Education, Chemistry and Management and the Special Chemistry degree. Enrolment in our Level 1 courses is approximately 500 students and for our core Level II and Level III courses is 60-120 students. Between 60 and 80 students graduate each year with majors in Chemistry.

The research interests of the staff include a wide variety of topics such as: Bauxite and Alumina processing, Environmental issues, Natural Products and Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Reaction Mechanisms, Transition Metal and Lanthanide Chemistry, Theoretical and Computational Chemistry, etc.
