Shapes of the 3d orbitals

Before beginning any discussion of Crystal Field Theory (CFT), it is essential that the shapes of the five d orbitals is revised.

dz 2 , dx 2 -y 2
dxy, dxz, dyz

For dx2-y2, dz2
Note that the electron density lies directly in line with the axes (i.e., the lobes of the orbitals point directly along the bond axes for an octahedral complex).

For dxy, dxz, dyz
Note that the electron density lies in between the axes (i.e., the lobes of the orbitals do not point directly along any of the bond axes for an octahedral complex).
