The Structure of Corundum

Corundum - Al₂O₃

Al₂O₃ has a common structural arrangement shared by many oxides of the transition metals with formula A₂O₃. It has a hexagonal close packed array of oxide ions with Al(III) sitting in 2/3 of the octahedral sites.

Complexes that adopt this structure include..
V₂O₃, Cr₂O₃, FeTiO₃ and a form of Fe₂O₃.
