Experiment 1 - Preparation and properties of some Cr(III) complexes
Preparation of some chromium(III) complexes, either:
- [Cr(en)3]Cl3 and
K[CrEDTA(H2O)]
- [Cr(urea)6]Cl3 and
K3[Cr(NCS)6] or
- cis-[Cr(en)2Cl2]Cl.1.5 H2O
and
cis-K[Cr(ox)2(H2O)2].2H2O
The on-line display showing the use of
Tanabe-Sugano diagrams makes use of JSpecView and Jmol which require the
Sun JAVA JDK/JRE 1.6 or above, available from the
SUN JAVA site
Note as well that the display was set for a minimum resolution of 1024*768.
The next page will display several regions:
- The top section has a menu of about 10 complexes to select from.
- On the left is the visible spectrum
- In the middle is the display of the 3D molecular graphics.
- On the right is a Tanabe-Sugano diagram for a d3 complex
- The bottom secion is for input to allow calculation of the
Racah parameter B' and to display the estimated energies of the electronic
transitions.
If you are all set then continue
The complexes displayed above are:
- K3[Cr(ox)3].3H2O
- [Cr(urea)6]Cl3
- [Cr(en)3]Cl3
- [Cr(oxine)3
- Chromium glycinate
- cis-[CrCl2(en)2]Cl.1.5
H2O
- Cr(acac)3
- K[Cr(EDTA)(H2O)]
- K3[Cr(NCS)6]
-
trans-K[Cr(ox)2(H2O)2].2H2O
-
cis-K[Cr(ox)2(H2O)2].2H2O
