Tanabe-Sugano diagrams via Java applets

A number of applets have been developed to aid in spectral interpretation, they were compiled with the Sun JDK vs 1.5 for Windows and should work with Internet Explorer and Netscape 7+/Mozilla/Firefox etc.

The applets

the d2 is for d2 (oct) and d8 (tet). d2 jar
the d3 is for d3 (oct) and d7 (tet). d3 jar
the d4 ls is for d4 low spin octahedral. d4 ls jar
the d5 ls is for d5 low spin octahedral. d5 ls jar
the d6 hs is for d6 high spin octahedral. d6 hs jar
the d6 ls is for d6 low spin octahedral. d6 ls jar
the d7 hs is for d7 high spin octahedral. d7 hs jar
the d8 is for d8 (oct) and d2 (tet). d8 jar

Both the spin-allowed and low-lying spin-forbidden transition energies are calculated and displayed.

Procedure

use the appropriate Tanabe-Sugano diagram to locate where the ratio of the second to first peak matches that found experimentally.
Tabulate the values of ν₁/B', ν₂/B', ν₃/B' from the Y-intercepts and Δ/B' from the X-intercept.

A spectroscopy exercise, based on the spectra of some simple Cr(III) complexes, has been developed that uses both JSpecView and Jmol and the TS d³ applet. This can be further developed for other Cr(III) examples where needed.
